Hospital Safety Score is a project of the Leapfrog Group, an independent and not-for-profit corporation that works to improve accountability and, along with it, patient safety in the medical community. According to their website, hospitals in Gadsden and surrounding areas of Alabama have significant room for improvement.
Using national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety survey along with data collected from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey, Hospital Safety Score has ranked our regional hospitals as follows:
- Gadsden Regional Medical Center – C
- Riverview Regional Medical Center – C
- Straightfellow Memorial Hospital – C
- Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center – C
In fact, of the seven regional hospitals ranked on the Hospital Safety Score website, only three, DeKalb Regional Medical Center and both the North and South locations of Marshall Medical Center, scored above a C. This does not bode well for patient safety or satisfaction at a majority of our regional hospitals.
