Attorney James M. Shelnutt started The Shelnutt Law Firm in 2003. James received his undergraduate degree from St. Leo University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and received a bachelor’s degree in Criminology. Before attending law school, James had a successful career in law enforcement and was the recipient of numerous commendations for his performance and courage as a police officer. After earning his undergraduate degree, James was accepted to the prestigious and well-known Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where he earned his Juris Doctorate of Law Degree. While in law school, James earned a position on the Cumberland Law Review and was later promoted to the position of Assistant Editor of the Cumberland Law Review. James was also heavily involved in trial competitions and was the recipient of various academic scholarships, including the Jerry Beasley Trial Advocacy Scholarship.

After graduating from law school, James declined several job offers from large Birmingham Area Law Firms in order to pursue his goal of starting his own practice. Over the years, James has built a respectable and well-known law practice that has served thousands of clients. James’ primary areas of practice include motor vehicle and trucking accidents, wrongful death, social security, worker’s compensation, and Domestic Law. James also previously worked for several years assisting the City of Gadsden with the prosecution of numerous misdemeanor criminal cases and traffic violations. This included prosecuting cases within the City of Gadsden Municipal Court as well as prosecuting and trying municipal appeals at the Circuit Court Level.

In addition to the practice of law, James was also appointed to serve as the head Presiding Judge for the City of Glencoe, Alabama in 2008 where his duties included hearing and presiding over all criminal and traffic cases brought before the Municipal Court, issuance of search warrants and arrest warrants, bond forfeitures and the overall administration of the Municipal Court. In 2012, James was unanimously re-appointed by the Mayor and City Council and he continued to serve in the position for several years afterward. During his tenure as a municipal judge, James presided over thousands of criminal and traffic cases.

Beginning in 2011, James regularly appeared on the Dave Mack Radio Show as an expert legal commentator where he was on live radio each week discussing a variety of local and national legal cases. In addition to appearing on the Dave Mack Show, James has also authored numerous written articles and has been asked to speak about a variety of legal topics at various events. James has also assisted and advised other commentators on a variety of legal issues before appearing on nationally syndicated television and radio shows.

James and his family live in Etowah County where he volunteers in youth sports and other civic activities.
